Safety Standards Certificate in Mississauga
Required to transfer ownership of a used vehicle in Ontario, and to register one brought in from another province. Not required just to renew a plate on a car you already own — which is worth knowing before someone sells you one.
$129, most vehicles done the same day.
It’s valid for 36 days and it is not a warranty. A certificate says the vehicle met the minimum standard on the day it was inspected. It says nothing about how long the brakes will last, whether the transmission is healthy, or what the car will need next month. For that you want a pre-purchase inspection.

02 / The usual fails
What actually stops a certificate in the GTA
| Item | Why here specifically |
|---|---|
| Brakes below minimum | The single most common fail, every year |
| Structural rust | Road salt. Rocker panels and subframe mounts. |
| Ball joints and tie rods | Potholes plus salt-corroded boots |
| Exhaust leaks | Salt again, plus short-trip condensation |
| Tires below 1.5 mm | Often one tire only, usually the spare-swapped one |
| Windshield cracks in the wiper area | Winter gravel on the 401 |
| Burnt-out lights | The cheapest fail there is. Check before you come. |
Check your bulbs in the driveway before booking. It costs nothing and it’s the most annoying reason to fail.
03 / If it fails
You’re not obliged to repair it here
You get a written list of the failed items with photographs and a quote to fix them. Take that anywhere you like — a lot of people do, and that’s fine.
If you have the repairs done elsewhere, bring it back and we re-inspect the failed items only, free of charge, within thirty days.
What we won’t do is pass a vehicle that doesn’t meet the standard. It’s our licence, and more to the point it’s a brake system that someone is going to drive their family around in.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Safety Standards Certificate inspection | $129 |
| Re-inspection of failed items (within 30 days) | free |
| Certificate for a trailer | $89 |
| Out-of-province registration inspection | $149 |
Questions
What people get told wrong
How long is it valid?
36 days from the inspection date. Plan the sale around it rather than getting one months in advance.
When do I actually need one?
To transfer ownership of a used vehicle and get plates, or to register a car from another province. Not to renew a sticker on a car you already own.
Does it include an emissions test?
No — Ontario ended Drive Clean for light-duty passenger vehicles on 1 April 2019. Heavy diesel commercial vehicles are a different matter, see fleet.
The seller says it’s “certified”. Is that the same thing?
Ask to see the actual certificate and check the date. “Certified” in a classified ad means nothing on its own, and a certificate issued two months ago has expired.
